Finally got around to cutting my shifter down to size. I want to point out that this is not as easy as it sounds.
First - pop off the base of the boot by lifting up at the rear and pushing forward. I took my Dremel and ground off the clip at the base of the shift knob. Pull straight up and the knob pops off.
Now - you'll notice that the shifter has been crimped into a "D" shape and has a slot in it so the knob won't spin. (Photo shows interior covered in a sheet to keep it clean)
After cutting the shaft off (1-1/4") using my Dremel and about 6 grinding discs, I put on my Sanding Drum attachment and ground the shaft flat on the one side. I then took a thin grinding wheel and ground a slot into the flat side. I finished by taking a fine flat file and hand filing the side to perfection.
I popped on the knob and wedged it down onto the shaft, it seemed to work exactly as planned (odd for my projects.) I took a Nylon zip tie and cranked it around the knob base, even though it does practically nothing (may change to a hose clamp later) and replaced the boot... viola, I had a shortened shifter.
Test drove it about 20 miles and I love it - with the Autotech Short Shifter, it seems to be a great combination. More comfortable and a nice stubby appearence. I tried to spin and lift the knob (reasonable pressure) and it holds on very securely.
Good Luck
